Aescher, Switzerland – Cliffside Restaurant Unveiled
Hello, travelers! I’m thrilled to share one of our most memorable and mystical adventures – a day trip to Aescher, Switzerland to visit the Aescher Restaurant and Guesthouse (Berggasthaus). Getting To Aescher
As soon as we landed in Zurich, Switzerland we picked up our rental car and drove straight to the picturesque Appenzell region of Switzerland. Aescher is easily accessible by car and public transportation alike. If you opt for public transport, the Swiss railway (SBB) will take you from Zurich to Wasserauen in around two hours. From Wasserauen, the Aescher cliffside restaurant is just a cable car ride and a short hike away.

Our first destination? The Ebenalp Cable Car ride. This was not your typical cable car ride. As we ascended to the top of the mountain, we were treated to panoramic views of the stunning Swiss landscape that left us speechless!
Exploring Wildkirchli Caves
Our adventure continued as we made our way through the enchanting Wildkirchli Caves. As an avid cave enthusiast, I (Rachel) was in awe of the natural beauty surrounding us. These caves, formed over millennia, have been known to humans since the Neolithic period and provide a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region.

Unveiling Wildkirchli Hermitage Chapel
As we traversed through the Wildkirchli caves, we found ourselves facing the serene and secluded Wildkirchli Hermitage Chapel. This chapel, with its quaint and humble structure, dates back to the Middle Ages and was inhabited by hermits until the late 19th century. It is indeed a surreal experience to attend a service here, high up in the mountains, amidst the echoes of the past.

Culinary Delight at Aescher Cliff Restaurant
The next stop on our journey was the iconic Aescher Cliff Restaurant. This nearly 170-year-old guesthouse and restaurant is literally carved into the mountainside, offering one of the most unique dining experiences you could imagine. It’s been a beacon for hikers, adventurers, and those seeking solitude since the 19th century.

The Swiss cuisine here is hearty and delectable, providing much-needed nourishment after a day of exploring. Be sure to try their specialty – Appenzeller Rösti, a traditional Swiss dish made from potatoes, accompanied by a side of local cheese and a chilled Swiss beer.
Aescher Travel Tips
Traveling during the shoulder season proved to be a blessing in disguise. The rain and fog added a mystical charm to our day, while the lack of crowds made our experience more personal and serene. However, be sure to dress appropriately. The Swiss weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains. Layers are your best friends here!
(Note: Shoulder season is the travel period between the peak and off-peak seasons. It’s a time when tourist crowds are less dense, prices are generally lower, and the weather is still relatively favorable – ideal for travelers looking for a more tranquil and cost-effective experience.)

After our meal, we embarked on a scenic walk back up to the Ebenalp cable cars. The fog-draped mountains and lush green fields served as the perfect backdrop for our contemplative journey back.
Our off-season Swiss Adventure was captured on our iPhone 13 Pro, using iPhone-ready lav mics for clear audio, and a small tripod for steady shots. We believe that traveling light and smart doesn’t compromise the quality of the content, but rather enhances our experiences.
